Underachieving AC Milan ended the year on a high by edging out plucky Frosinone 4-2 at the Stadio Matusa.

The Rossoneri have spent most of 2015 in the Serie A wilderness, but will enjoy Christmas in sixth place thanks to goals from Ignazio Abate, Carlos Bacca, Alex and Giacomo Bonaventura.

Although Daniel Ciofani put Sinisa Mihajlovic's men on the back foot with an early opener, with Federico Dionisi setting some nerves jangling with his late goal, Frosinone could not avoid defeat and remain in the relegation zone.

They took the lead in the 19th minute. Shambolic defending from Milan allowed Ciofani beat the stranded Antonio Donnarumma with ease.

Try as they might, Milan could not equalise before half-time and a rethink was required.

Whatever was said worked as Abate drew his team level five minutes after the restart, the Italy full-back finishing off a rapid counter-attack to fire up the away fans.

Milan took the lead in the 55th minute. Confusion reigned at the back again and Bacca was the man who capitalised.

Frosinone's confidence dipped as Milan's swelled and the next goal went the way of the visitors, Brazilian centre-back Alex leaping to power home a header from a 77th-minute corner.

There was still time for some late drama at the Matusa. Dionisi ensured the final minutes would be tense as he nodded Daniel Pavlovic's free-kick beyond Donnarumma.

But any butterflies in the stomach were soothed when Bonaventura converted Andrea Poli's pass in stoppage time.
