Reports that Niko Kranjcar, the Croatian playmaker, is on the brink of a move to Glasgow Rangers are premature, The Telegraph has learned.

Kranjcar has returned to form and fitness in recent months following his move to NASL club New York Cosmos.

And a groin injury he suffered less than three minutes into Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies - which is likely to keep him out for several weeks - has not put off his many suitors.

As well as Rangers, The Telegraph has learned that clubs from France and Italy have made offers, which he is willing to consider, while a number of Major League Soccer clubs have made inquiries, too.

"The injury is unfortunate but the timing is such that it comes more as an opportunity for interested parties than an obstacle," a source said.

"Most teams that have inquired about him now understand that he may represent a unique chance to bring world-class talent at a reasonable price."

Kranjcar has also enjoyed his time both in New York and at the Cosmos and is "very open" to staying at the club, for whom he signed for the 10-game NASL Spring Season.

The 31-year-old recently spoke of his enjoyment of his time at the club.

“I’ve said it from the first day, I love it here,” Kranjcar told Empire of Soccer. "I think it’s a great team, a great soccer club.

"I’m really enjoying my time here. My main focus is obviously on the next game, to win the next game and then hopefully the Spring Season at the end of it.

"And then it will be easier at the end of it to talk about my future and obviously what the club wants to do.”

The club certainly want to keep him.

Erik Stover, chief operating officer at the Cosmos, told STV: "We are hopeful we can do an extension with Niko but we are aware clubs are interested in him.

"I think he would like to stay with us, it's a negotiating process. There's an interest from both parties to work something out but time will tell."

The source added: "Niko has several options."
