Mamadou Sakho: Liverpool defender returns with Under-23s

Mamadou Sakho made his return to action for Liverpool as the defender played in an Under-23s defeat by Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

The France international had not played for the Reds at any level since April, when it emerged he had tested positive for a type of fat burner the previous month.

The case was later dismissed by European football's governing body.

Sakho played the full 90 minutes at Prenton Park as Liverpool lost 2-1.

The former PSG player had claimed on social media earlier this week that Liverpool did want him to play in the reserves. "Why, I don't know," he said at the time.

That comment came after Reds manager Jurgen Klopp previously said that Sakho was not ready to play first-team football.

Sakho has made 55 appearances for Liverpool since joining them from Paris St-Germain in 2013.
