Stoke v Everton preview: Idrissa Gueye not back in time to face Potters

Everton's Idrissa Gueye will not face Stoke at the Bet365 Stadium in the Premier League on Wednesday night, despite his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations having come to an end.

Gueye's Senegal were eliminated from the tournament in Gabon on Saturday, but Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has emphasised his return to club action will be in this weekend's match against Bournemouth at the earliest.

Everton travel to the Potteries having won their last three league games - form which has won over fans who had started to voice their displeasure at the lack of progress they felt Koeman was making.

Stoke also come into this encounter in good form, having won two of their last three, and have been boosted by the arrival of Saido Berahino, whom boss Mark Hughes hopes with give Stoke a different dimension.

"We want to be able to release him in behind," Hughes said. "And maybe that is something we are going to have to work on because he has attributes that can really help improve us."

Team news

Berahino is likely to play some part. The former West Brom striker is not ready for a full 90 minutes having not played competitively since September but Hughes says he is fit enough to feature.

Midfielder Ramadan Sobhi is still at the Africa Cup of Nations. Forwards Wilfried Bony and Mame Biram Diouf have finished at the tournament but it remains to be seen if they are involved. Jonathan Walters, Geoff Cameron, Jack Butland and Stephen Ireland are still out.

Koeman has also confirmed goalkeeper Joel Robles - who has registered four clean sheets in his last five league games - will retain his starting place, once again keeping Maarten Stekelenburg out of the team.

Opta stats

Everton have won their last two Premier League games against Stoke without conceding a single goal.

The Toffees will be looking to win both home and away against Stoke in the same Premier League season for the first time since 2008-09.

Since the start of last season, only Harry Kane (42) has been involved in more goals than Romelu Lukaku (30 goals, 10 assists) in the Premier League.

Lukaku has scored four goals in his six previous appearances for Everton against Stoke in the league.

Peter Crouch is on 99 Premier League goals. He's scored five goals in the competition against Everton, but none have come in his last 13 appearances versus them.

Merson's prediction

Stoke and Everton have not lost a game since being dumped out of the FA Cup. They have both hit form so this one is difficult to call. Some of the football Stoke played at Sunderland was breath-taking while Everton wiped the floor with Man City and won at Palace.

Both teams have entertaining players that can produced and I don't think either defence will be able to contain the opposition's attack.

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-2 (12/1 with Sky Bet)

Everton are fractionally favourites with Sky Bet to pick up all three points when Ronald Koeman's side clash with Stoke on Wednesday evening. The Potters can be backed at 7/4, with the draw on offer at 23/10.

A 1-1 draw is top of the correct score betting at 5/1, with visiting striker Romelu Lukaku 4/1 market leader to open the scoring. Peter Crouch, Saido Berahino and Marko Arnautovic are considered most likely for the hosts (all on offer at 13/2).
