Garry Monk closing on best Leeds manager win percentage

Leeds season preview
Image: Garry Monk has excelled since taking charge at Elland Road

Should Garry Monk see his Leeds side earn victory over Reading on Saturday, his win percentage will surpass that of the great Don Revie.

Despite not being fancied by many at the start of the season, Monk has masterminded an unlikely promotion push in the Elland Road hot seat, and success at the Madejski, live on Sky Sports, will propel the Whites to third in the Sky Bet Championship.

And, on a more personal level, victory will give Monk a win percentage of 54.3 since taking the reins - the best of any Leeds manager in history.

Leeds managers win percentage

Manager Games managed Games won Win %
Don Revie 740 395 53.4
Garry Monk 45 24 53.3
Gary McAllister 50 25 50
David O'Leary 203 101 49.8
Simon Grayson 169 84 49.7

Revie, who has had a statue erected outside Elland Road in his honour, took charge of a colossal 740 Leeds matches, winning 395. Monk's 45 games at the helm pales in comparison to the former England manager, but it represents a mightily impressive start given Leeds' recent travails.

Monk has emerged successful 24 times since taking the job. Seven of the men that came before the former Swansea boss have not managed to win more games than Monk.

The stats continue to paint Monk in a favourable light in the land of the White Rose. Leeds have accumulated more points this season since the 2010/11 campaign - and we still have eight games to go - while only Huddersfield have garnered more points in 2017 than the men from West Yorkshire.

Leeds' resurgence has been built on two things - Chris Wood's goals and a solid rearguard. To have 14 clean sheets by this stage, in a league as unpredictable as the Championship, is impressive.

Dave Hockaday 6 2
Brian McDermott 55 21
Neil Warnock 63 23

This is the most shutouts Leeds have earned since the 2009/10 season when the Whites were playing in League One, and the most while in the Championship in 11 years - again with plenty of football still to play.

Wood leads the scoring charts with 24 to date, but faces a race to be fit to take on the Royals on Friday night. Should he manage to overcome the knock sustained on international duty, expect a direct Leeds to cause plenty of problems.

If the New Zealand international fails to prove his fitness, set pieces are likely to be the main line of attack for the Whites. No other side in the Championship has scored more often from corners this season.

And if Reading were still not aware of the task at hand, eight away wins so far represents Leeds' best return on the road since 2011/12. They last enjoyed a better record away from home in 2009/10.
