Serena Williams, who last week revealed she is expecting her first child with fiancé Alexis Ohanian, has written a touching note to her baby, which she shared with her followers on Instagram.

"My Dearest Baby," she captions a photograph showing off her baby bump.

"You gave me the strength I didn't know I had. You taught me the true meaning of serenity and peace. I can't wait to meet you. I can't wait for you to join the players box next year.

"But most importantly, I am so happy to share being number one in the world with you.... once again today. On @alexisohanian bday. From the world's oldest number one to the world's youngest number one. - Your Mommy"

Williams revealed she is 20-weeks pregnant last week by sharing a close up of her growing bump on Snapchat.

Supporters were quick to work out that Williams was pregnant during her 23rd slam triumph in Melbourne in January.

Following news of Williams' pregnancy, her spokeswoman said the tennis superstar will not play again in 2017 but will return to the tour in 2018.

Kelly Bush Novak told Reuters that Williams "definitely" would not be able to play again this year but "looks forward to returning in 2018."

Williams announced in December that she was engaged to Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit, the social messaging site.
