Newcastle have had a £8m bid for winger Jacob Murphy turned down by Norwich, according to Sky sources.

Murphy scored 10 times for Norwich last season and was one of the standout performers for England at this summer's U21 European Championships in Poland.

Newcastle are expected to return with an improved offer, with manager Rafa Benitez keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Benitez expressed his frustration over the "crazy" transfer market on Monday and admitted the club's summer recruitment had not been ideal.

Newcastle have made just two major signings this summer, with winger Christian Atsu arriving from Chelsea on a permanent deal and defender Florian Lejeune joining from Eibar.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Crystal Palace, Southampton, Swansea and West Bromwich Albion have previously shown an interest in Murphy.
