James McFadden will meet with new Scotland head coach Alex McLeish next week to discuss becoming part of his backroom staff, Sky sources understand.
McFadden's only coaching experience came at Motherwell where he spent the 2016-17 season as the club's assistant manager, working with Mark McGhee.
The former Everton and Birmingham City striker returned to playing with Queen of the South in September last year on a short-term deal, but left the club in January.
McLeish returns to the role he previously held for less than a year before leaving to become Birmingham boss in 2007, after Scotland narrowly missed out on qualification for the 2008 European Championship.
McLeish's first games in charge will be the friendly against Costa Rica at Hampden Park on March 23, followed by an away game against Hungary four days later.
