Zinedine Zidane will put finishing second behind Barcelona ahead of prioritising a Champions League semi-final with Bayern Munich when Athletic Bilbao visit the Bernabeu on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports Football.
His side trail second-placed rivals Atletico Madrid by four points with six games to play in La Liga, and have only finished outside the top two once since 2004.
Real missed an opportunity to close the gap to a single point when the two sides drew 1-1 at the Bernabeu earlier this month, but Zidane is determined to prioritise an unlikely overhaul of their near neighbours, who face only one side in the top eight - Getafe - in their remaining games.
"The most important thing for us is to try to get back to second place, which is our goal," Zidane told the club's official website.
"We have climbed back up to third and in this game we're playing at home. We want to get closer to second place and we will try to put in a good performance."
Bilbao have won only three of their last 14 La Liga games, but they have lost fewer games than fifth-placed Getafe over the season; their inability to finish off teams has been their Achilles heel in the league this season.
They have dropped 10 points from winning positions this season - four in two games prior to their recent poor run - and could be set for their lowest-finish in nine years, since they finished in 13th, their current position, back in 2009.
But a win in the capital could take them into the top half, with even the likes of Girona in eighth, only five points better off than the Basque side, not out of reach should their form pick up.
