Martin O’Neill confronted a referee at the U17 European Championships after Ireland had their goalkeeper sent off during a penalty shoot-out loss against the Netherlands.

Ireland's young 'keeper Jimmy Corcoran was issued a second yellow card from referee Zbynek Proske for coming off his line when saving the Netherlands' fifth spot-kick.

A distraught Corcoran was in tears as he was forced to hand his goalkeeper shirt to defender Oisin McEntree.

The Netherlands went on to win the shoot-out 5-4 after the game had ended 1-1. The defeat saw Ireland exit the competition and sends the Netherlands through to the semi-finals.

O'Neill, who had been watching from the stands in Chesterfield, then came on to the pitch to remonstrate with the officials.

Ireland had forced their way back into the match after the Netherlands capped a spell of dominance by grabbing the lead in the 62nd minute with a powerful header by Liam van Gelderen.
