Hannes Wolf has vowed to stand by Scotland Under 21 star David Bates after his first red card in Germany.

The former Rangers defender was shown two yellow cards for his new club in their Bundesliga II win against Magdeburg.

It was only the second sending off in his career - the last one came three years ago when he was playing for East Stirling in League Two.

But boss Wolf - who was only appointed last week, insists Bates, who was linked with a move to the English Premier League earlier this month, will learn from his dismissal.

He said: "David knows himself he made a bad error for the second yellow card.

"I told him that mistakes like that can hurt the team and again he understands that perfectly.

"But he will learn from that and be even better for it. Hopefully, the next time he plays we will finish with 11 men!

"Actually, the red card galvanised us and we started to play better after that and scored the winning goal.

"We had only two training sessions together before the game and I was delighted at their response. David will still be a big part of my plans."
