Discussions are ongoing between Manchester United and Spanish duo Juan Mata and Ander Herrera regarding new deals at the club, Sky Sports News understands.

Both players' contracts are due to expire at the end of the season, with team-mates Anthony Martial, David de Gea and Ashley Young also in the final year of their current deals.

On Monday, Sky Sports News reported United are in discussions with Young over a new one-year contract for the defender.

Mata, who joined from Chelsea in 2014, last had a one-year contract extension triggered back in January.

The 30-year-old has started five of United's 12 Premier League games this season, scoring once in October's 3-2 win over Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Herrera has started in the league just twice, coming off the bench on four occasions, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Fred and Marouane Fellaini all clocking up more minutes in midfield.

Herrera, 29, had been linked with a move to former club Athletic Bilbao in the summer, but in August he reiterated his desire to stay at Old Trafford.
