Gylfi Sigurdsson admits for Everton to still be in contention for European football is remarkable after a poor first half of the season.

Everton's Gylfi Sigurdsson believes the possibility of qualifying for next season's Europa League would not necessarily make the campaign a successful one.

Marco Silva's side host Burnley on Friday night, live on Sky Sports, knowing a victory would move them to within a point of seventh-placed Wolves ahead of the season finale away to Tottenham the following Sunday.

And should they win both games and results elsewhere go in their favour the Blues could have a backdoor into Europe - if Manchester City beat Watford in the FA Cup final.

However the Icelandic midfielder is surprised the side even have an outside chance of qualification after an erratic first campaign under Silva.

"It shouldn't be possible with the first half of the season we had - dropping far too many points to clubs around us or below us," Sigurdsson told Sky Sports.

"But it shows if you put a run of results together you can quickly go up the table - it might be a little bit too little too late though.

"Of course this club wants to be in Europe but whether we can judge this season as a successful one if we get into Europe or not I don't know.

"We need to be more consistent going forward and the way we are playing now is completely different to the way we were playing two or three months ago."

Everton's Gyfli Sigurdsson asks for fans to be patient with manager Marco Silva in his first season in charge at the club.

Regardless as to whether Everton do manage to claim European football or not, Sigurdsson believes the side are currently playing the best football of the season and are determined to finish the campaign on a high.

"We're trying to build on this end of the season to go into the next one," added Sigurdsson.

"I think everyone around the club feels we're playing our best football at the minute and hopefully we've found something that is working to get the results and the best out of the team moving forward."
