The impending rebuild at Western Sydney Wanderers will also involve finding a new captain after skipper Brendan Hamill confirmed his departure from the club.

Hamill played over 100 matches for the club across five seasons and joins a huge exodus that also includes stars Alex Baumjohann, Oriol Riera and Roly Bonevacia.

The centre-back announced his exit on social media.

“This was undoubtably the hardest decision I’ve been faced with in my career. My time at WSW has come to an end,” Hamill wrote on Instagram.

“It has been an absolute privilege to represent this club, my home town where I was raised, for the last 5 seasons. Not a day has passed that I’ve ever taken that for granted.

“This club represents everything I come from and everything I believe in. The loyal members, fans, and RBB are truly world class. I personally thank each and everyone of you for your positive words, for your criticism, but most importantly for your undying passion. You added ten fold to the honour that it was to represent the Wanderers.

“I gave everything I had for the club, both on and off the pitch. I’m hungry to continue my development as a footballer to entertain the fans, and to earn the appreciation and respect of the club that I play for. Therefore, I feel it is time to part ways to find something that is more aligned with my passion, ambitions, and beliefs.

“I wish the club nothing but the best. Who knows what the future holds, perhaps we may meet again!”

The club has since confirmed his departure with a thank you message.

“Brendan has been nothing short of exceptional for this club, both as a player and person,” Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said.

“He will forever be associated with a successful part of this club’s history and we wish him every success in the next part of his journey.”

Hamill’s next destination is unclear.
